Review By: Blackbird (Inmate)

Laugh out loud funny with plenty of wisdom to share.

You need to read this book! It is funny, painfully honest and inspirational to the point you won't want it to end. There was so many strong moments in this book that helped me better understand myself that I really believe it can benefit anyone who chooses to read it. This memoir of Kevin Hart's life teaches the reader about the struggles he went through to reach the top of comedy and how easy it could be to lose it all if you can't find a life of balance. Reading this book Hart shares his failures and successes and what kept him going to better himself along the way. Even though this is a book about Kevin Hart's life it reads at certain points almost like a self-help book with the wisdom and strategies he shares.

Reading this book I was struck with how honest Hart was with the readers. He talks about his trouble with alcohol, debt, a missing father and the abusive relationships he has been part of. I think many inmates could relate to his story and upbringing. There were many portions of Hart's life I sadly could picture my own struggles with. One of the most notable things that hit home to me was how often he found some success to only find ways to self-sabotage and destroy what he had built. I also saw that one of the keys to breaking this cycle was taking a true look at himself to learn who he really was.

The book talks so much about learning to reflect and challenge yourself, while at the same time learning to love yourself. He shares about how it is needed to have perseverance when things are tough, but we can't force things before they are ready. I can really relate to this. For so long if I wanted something I felt I had to have it right away or else I was somehow being robbed. In truth I can see how I wasn't ready for many of the things I believed I deserved and if I just waited and built a stronger foundation once I received them it would have been more successful. Patience is a major lesson of this book and I am thankful for it.

Please read this book and become inspired to believe you can be who you want to be.
