Some heroes you don’t get to hear about, many others became heroes when they were not looking to be.
The book cover marks this as “one of the most incredible rescue stories ever told,” but I have read other World War II stories that have outranked this one in bravery. Don’t let me wrong about its content; I loved this book! And because I have been to many of the places in the Philipines it mentions, I could put myself there in the thicket of the action and poor conditions these men had to endure. The weather alone would kill you. While there have been many stories published about the harsh treatments of POW’s by the Japanese during WWII, this book dove into the rougher treatment, and sometimes kindness, that some men can bestow on others. There were about three chapters that I didn’t want to let go of while getting caught up in the rescue mission, this book also covered the loneliness and genuine concern of the Filipino people over their conquerors to help the American soldiers.
