Review By: Blackbird (Inmate)

Freeing yourself from the fear holding you back to find recovery.

Summary/review: Being incarcerated has led to the deepest levels of loss and grief for me in life. This grief is something that often haunts me to the point I feel it would be easier to just give up. Hitting rock bottom I have come to realize I needed to change to find the love as I always searched for in myself. This book is a tool to help work through grief in order to find the mental peace all inmates deserve.

This book is structured to work with the 12 step process, but it can also be read alone to help recovery. The author talks frequently about learning to let go of fear and anger to manage grief. This is something I struggle with like many inmates. Having real open reflection on what creates these things allows for an understanding of what feeds your addiction.

As inmates it seems we are all addicted to something in life. It might not be drugs or alcohol, but anger and fear. The feeling of not being of value is a concept we become addicted to and in it we live in a cycle life of grief. This is something I have had to over come while incarcerated as more of my world seems to be stripped away.

I found this book really helpful in the plans created for the reader to follow to build better understanding of our triggers that lead us back to grief or addiction. With this understanding we can break the cycle. If you are working on the oath to sobriety this mighty be a strong book for you.
